Induct new teachers properly
The first term decides whether a teacher stays. Give every new joiner a mentor, a clear handbook and a lighter first week, and check in with them regularly.
Develop strong coordinators
People leave managers, not schools. Coordinators who plan well, give useful feedback and protect their team’s time are the single biggest factor in retention.
Reduce unnecessary paperwork
Audit the registers, reports and duplicate records teachers maintain. Remove what nobody reads and digitise what remains. Time returned to teachers is time returned to children.
Offer real growth
Create visible career paths: subject lead, coordinator, mentor teacher. Pair them with year-round training so ambitious teachers can see a future with you.
Recognise good work often
A note from the principal, a mention in assembly or a parent’s thank-you shared in the staff room costs nothing and means a great deal. Make recognition a habit, not an annual event.
